DDSB Celebrates EcoSchool Achievements with Eco-Summits
On October 21st, teachers and students from over 41 certified EcoSchools in Durham District School Board gathered for a day-long Elementary EcoSummit.

This was the first EcoSummit organized by DDSB – a celebration of all their EcoSchools achievements from last year as well as an environmental learning day for staff and students to get inspired and plan their eco initiatives for this year. Student-centred learning conferences are one of the ways that boards are celebrating EcoSchools achievements.

Students who attended the EcoSummit participated in 2 (out of a possible 7) hands-on workshops which provided opportunities for students to learn about and develop skills within the four pillars of the EcoSchools program.

Welcome to the Screaming Avocado: A high school cafeteria like you've never seen before
from GreenLivingOnline.com
For many high school kids returning to school this September, noshing on some greasy French fries is the closest they’ll get to tasting a vegetable at lunchtime.

While lunch at school was once a treat, today thousands of students across Canada ditch their brown bags in favour of buying food at the cafeteria—or worse, from the vending machine—choosing fast food over real food. “We have [students at school] for a big part of their waking hours, for some of them two meals a day, but they have options to buy whatever crap they want,” says Finkelstein.

Initial EcoReview tracker with 0 out of 19 question completed

A checkmark indicates that your school has inputted all the questions for the January 31st deadline.

Initial EcoReview deadline Jan. 31st

Don’t forget to get out and assess your school’s energy and waste practices by completing and inputting your EcoReviews before January 31st. The EcoReview is a great student engagement tool for all ages.

Once you are registered you can input the results for your EcoReviews in Energy Conservation (Q2.1-2.9) and Waste Minimization (Q3.1-3.10). Schools can track their progress in their EcoReview Tracker which can be found in the top left corner of your application.

When you see a checkmark in your tracker, you have met the requirements for the Jan. 31st deadline and can continue implementing and inputting the rest of your application before April 30th (the final deadline).

See page 6 in the Certification Guide 2011-12 for more details.

An Earth-friendly Holiday Season
The holiday season provides an excellent opportunity to start ecologically-minded traditions in the festive spirit of giving to the whole planet.

St Francis of Assisi, SMCDSB, promoted a Green Christmas last year by creating a competition for the best wreath constructed of recycled materials. This was a whole school activity led by the Green Team, encouraging students to submit a plan for reusing, recycling or eliminating the materials used in making the wreath.

In DPCDSB, students created a quilt that was made from their  self-created eco-pledges at St. Barbara Elementary. This could be a cosy idea for generating awareness about earth-friendly holidays.

More ideas from schools on how they promoted a green holiday season are here.

Tips for getting family on board for an environmentally friendly celebration, ideas for gifts, wrapping, cards and the tree are here.

EcoSchools Supports School Initiatives
Throughout the years, the Ontario EcoSchools program has been identified as a key support to a spectrum of school initiatives. These connections can help bolster support and capacity for the program within your school.

Ontario EcoSchools has created a concept map of the initiatives it supports within a school. See how the EcoSchools program connects to: Character development, Safe schools, Healthy Schools, Student success, Growing success and more here.

This helpful resource can be shared with Principal/Administrators, parents, school council members as well as trustees to communicate some of the benefits of the EcoSchools program and areas for collaboration.
