continued: Birds no longer sing the blues at Meadowview

Different design specifications, such as size, ventilation and ease of cleaning, were discussed prior to building the nest boxes, and research was done to determine which areas of the school grounds were most conducive to bluebird habitat.

Ultimately, a decision was made to place the five nest boxes in a grassy area near a marsh bordered by young trees and shrubs. This project was connected to the curriculum (grade 4 science & technology) and students learned about the effects of human activities, both negative and positive, on bird populations and the role habitat enhancement and protection can play in the rehabilitation of species at risk such as the bluebird.

Students were as happy as a box of birds to find that, following their efforts, bluebird populations had returned to Meadowview and that sightings were almost a daily occurrence. In fact, all five nest boxes were at one point inhabited by playful bluebird families.

This initiative has provided further opportunities for students at Meadowview to get outside, to gain an appreciation for the outdoors and to interact with nature. It is certainly is a story to tweet about!
