Initial EcoReview Deadline Fast Approaching - January 31st
Happy New Year to everyone! At this time each year, the first milestone in the certification process comes around: it's time to input results from the Initial Eco-Reviews at: certapp.ontarioecoschools.org.

EcoTeams need to conduct the two EcoReviews – one assessing Energy Conservation practices and one for assessing Waste Minimization practices in their school – and input these results into Q 2.1-2.9 and Q 3.1-3.10. Entering the data well before Jan 31st ensures there will be no last minute problems!

NEW! Initial EcoReview tracker
This new function of the online application is found in the top left hand corner of the application screen. When schools have inputted results for all 19 out of 19 questions they will see a checkmark indicating that they have successfully inputted and saved their data. Once the Initial EcoReviews are completed, schools have until April 30th, the final deadline, to complete the rest of the application. Ontario EcoSchools is excited to see all the environmental achievements that have been undertaken this year by students!

It's Cool to Walk & Roll to School
Over 500 students and staff from the central mountain school of St. Marguerite d’Youville in Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board participated in International Walk to School Day in October 2010.

Students wore yellow and walked or biked to school. The school took up the challenge with the City of Hamilton’s Smart Commute Active Transportation Team in finding eco-friendly alternatives getting to school and the school won the Smart Commute Challenge.

Classes also participated in Daily Physical Activity (DPA), using walking to promote a healthier life style. The EcoTeam and HAT Healthy Action Team) arranged for a photo session where everyone helped build a human tree and held up green leaves to show their commitment to active transportation.

This is a great example of an activity combining environmental learning and action with whole school engagement. This initiative could be claimed for points toward certification in the Environmental Stewardship section of the EcoSchools program. (Please be sure your initiative meets all the criteria for full points.)

Landscape Design Project Creates Cross Curricular Greening for Grade 11 & 12 Students
At Cawthra Park Secondary School in Mississauga, "green" is an all encompassing concept, inclusive of environment, ecology, energy, education and an enthusiastic EcoTeam.

As part of the Grade 12 Technological Design curriculum, understanding environmentally responsible
design practices and applying them in the technological design process is a major expectation.
