Teachers Share Inspiring EcoSchools Initiatives
Teachers at this winter's EcoSchools PD Workshops shared some of their successful EcoSchools initiatives:

  • Oscar Awards: create Oscar-the-Grouch from a green pompom and a film canister; give to the class that has the least amount of garbage
  • Canadian Tire money collected for SGG or other projects
  • Letter to Rubbermaid netted free litterless lunch containers for all 200 students in school
  • Cafeteria oil and grease recycled for bio fuel - General Amherst HS, GECDSB
  • Paperless Lesson Day - classes compete for most interesting paperless lesson - WCI, TVDSB
  • Energy Hog Award - St Nicholas, DPCDSB
  • Grade 9 students receive stainless steel reusable water bottles as welcome gifts, St Paul SS, DPCDSB (ed. this is a great initiative for JK registrants too—start as you mean to go to reduce waste!)
  • Letters to mayor to encourage and persuade green bin program - John Dearness PS
  • Students build pop can crusher (tied to curriculum?) St. Paul SS, DPCDSB

Video tips
If your class is interested in making videos, we have found some helpful how-to tips in a short video starring Colin Mochrie by the Conservation Council of Ontario.

The Conservation Council is also going to be launching Canada's first video website devoted exclusively to conservation www.weconservetv.ca. The website has a list of topics to be addressed in video submissions.
