Sun Safety
Make sure your students have fun without getting too much sun. We have compiled a list of resources to help your students learn about ultra violet radiation (UVR) and the importance of minimizing exposure during peak UVR periods.

At an elementary school in the Thames Valley District School Board, students gather in the shade provided by trees.  Active play areas (the basketball hoops and soccer field) are necessarily kept clear, but this school ground provides shaded areas where spectators can gather too.

Resources

Local Public Health Departments
Some public health departments offer outreach and resources about UVR protection (i.e., Toronto and York Region). Contact your local public health department for more information.

Health Canada has a sun safety section with number of resources including:
UV Index Sun Awareness Program - Register your class on-line or via the mail-back registration card to receive a kit containing a guidebook and UV index meter. Registration to this program is restricted to Canadian elementary and secondary school teachers and must be completed by April 30th.

Environment Canada has a UV Index Program with information on UV for students and teachers

Canadian Dermatology Association which has a cool Be Fit, Be Sun Safe poster and pdf on Steps to Sun Protection During Outdoor Sport and Recreational Activities
