It doesn't have to be warm to start planning!
Don't feel left out if you haven't greened your school grounds yet. This is a good time to start planning as the process is rather lengthy! It usually takes 18 months to 2 years to implement your plan but proper planning upfront is always worthwhile. Check with your board before planning any school ground greening for policies and procedures that will help ensure the success and longevity of the project.

This extensive master plan was created by high school students in the Niagara Catholic District School Board with the help of a teacher who had a background in landscape design. It provides shade, seating and an outdoor classroom in the southwest corner of the school. Plans had to be put on hold until a final decision was made regarding the location of an addition to the school, underscoring the importance to consult with the board on any school ground greening projects.

Check out our School Ground Greening Guide and Evergreen's resources to help guide you through the process.

Investigate potential resources in your area: visit other schools in your board that have successful greening projects (maybe they will mentor you!), seek advice from local horticultural clubs – they may be a source of support and plant material.

Remember to include students in every step of the school ground greening project. Examples of student surveys and other engagement strategies can be found in the School Ground Greening guide and on the Evergreen website.
