The Outdoor Classroom Space
Here are some good examples of outdoor classroom spaces at Ontario schools. Important components to consider include shade, mulch and seating materials. Check with your board before planning any school ground greening for policies and procedures that will help ensure the success and longevity of the project.

Native trees have been strategically planted to provide shade for the seating areas. Mulch helps reduce soil compaction, provides nutrients to soil and reduces weeds. Armour stone (square or rectangular shaped stone)  provides seating that is durable and virtually vandal-resistant. Unlike logs, armour stone doesn’t decay or provide habitat for stinging insects. Information about designing and maintaining outdoor classrooms can be found in our School Ground Greening Guide
