Helping students develop a sense of place — caring for school grounds
Caring for their school grounds regularly helps students develop an understanding of human and natural systems and their interactions. Composting, mulching, watering, weeding, planting and saving seeds all provide an opportunity for students to develop a sense of place and take ownership for their school grounds.

PITCH-IN CANADA has resources helpful for schools to initiate clean-up and beautification programs to enhance, conserve and our environment. Check with your municipal government to see if they participate in PITCH-IN CANADA'S 20 Minute Makeover program which provides supplies for litter pick-up such as garbage bags and gloves. PITCH-IN CANADA Week is April 20-26.

Remember to Care for Trees
1. Mulch your trees to protect them from soil compaction and to create a ‘buffer zone’ that will reduce contact between tree bark/roots and lawn mowers and string trimmers. Evergreen's Mulch is Magic pdf tells you everything you need to know about mulch.
2. Water regularly until new trees are established and during dry periods.
3. Always have a protection strategy in place for new trees.
4. Leave your leaves - they are the best natural fertilizer.

See our School Ground Greening Guide for more details.

Download our Maintenance Schedule Sign-up Sheet pdf to encourage participation in caring for your school grounds.

Here is another example of a sign-up sheet. This one is a very large calendar with lots of space for various roles at Empire School in Waterloo Region District School Board.
