Private schools, like all schools in Ontario, are welcome to use the Ontario EcoSchools resources free of charge. However, due to limited resources and increasing demand, Ontario EcoSchools will recover the costs of certification if private schools choose to apply.
A fee of $150 will be charged every year to assess each application. This fee will go towards recovering some of the costs associated with assessing and if successful, certifying the schools. This includes: the assessment of the online certification application, as well as administrative and material costs associated with the certification process.
A fee of $150 will be charged every other year for site visits. The site visit fee will go towards recovering some of the costs associated with the 30-45 minute site visit conducted by a trained Ontario EcoSchools assessor. Site visits will be conducted every other year, starting with a mandatory site visit in a school’s first year of certification.
For example, if you received a site visit last year (10-11), you will not receive a site visit this year (11-12), but you will receive one next year (12-13).

(If the private school is located outside a 50km radius of the Ontario EcoSchools office, a travel cost of $0.38/km will be charged for the distance beyond).
Ontario EcoSchools tracks certification histories and submitted applications and will contact schools who require a site visit. An invoice will be issued to the school when the final application is received. Schools not receiving a site visit are responsible for submitting all portfolio documents to the Ontario EcoSchools office in Toronto (720 Bathurst St., #202, Toronto, ON, M5S 2R4).
The charge for applying for certification applies whether or not the school achieves certification and there are no refunds. Please note that certification deadlines are the same for all applicants.
